Xavi: Fabregas Penerusku di Barca

Detiksport/mrp

Seperti apa akhirnya kita tunggu saja.

Barcelona Tim Paling Kreatif

Prince Ali Desak Pemilihan Presiden AFC Baru

Metrotvnews.com, Zurich: Desakan agar Konfederasi Sepakbola Asia (AFC) segera memilih presiden baru menyusul sanksi seumur hidup yang diberikan oleh FIFA kepada Mohamed Bin Hammam terus bergulir. Saat ini Bin Hammam mengajukan proses banding.

Setelah sebelumnya presiden Federasi Sepakbola Jepang (JFA) Junji Ogura, kini giliran Wakil Presiden FIFA Prince Ali Al Hussein yang mengeluarkan desakan serupa.

Ketua PSSI Yakin Indonesia Singkirkan Turkmenistan

Lady gaga lupa pake celana??

Pinkan Pindah Agama Bukan Karena Guna-Guna

Russia-ASEAN- great cooperation potential

Potential for cooperation between Russia and the ASEAN Association of Southeast Asian Nations allows to set large-scale goals, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, a participant in the forum, has stated, noting that Russia’s targets joining integration processes planned by the Association, such as creating a joint economic community in the region by 2015.

The forum that was held on Indonesia’s Bali comprised a series of bilateral meetings, including a Russia-ASEAN ministerial meeting and the East Asia Summit for the first time featuring Moscow and Washington.

Russia wanted to check the implementation of previous decisions in the sphere of economy, energy, science and fight against threats and challenges. ASEAN has shown interest in Russia’s proposals, Lavrov said

"ASEAN countries are greatly interested in oil and gas cooperation, together with peaceful nukes, transport and logistics projects which are to be considered at the Irkutsk and Khabarovsk forums this year. We have serious plans."

Russia-ASEAN ties are seeing progress - the parties increased bilateral turnover three-fold since the first 2005 summit - from $4 bn to 12.5 bn. That is especially significant at a time of the global recession triggered by the crisis. Lavrov believes that bilateral turnover has a great potential and should be built up further.

Russia also wants integration into Asia and the Pacific, already being an active member of the APEC forum, which it is to preside in 2012 and getting ready for the Vladivostok summit scheduled for this September. In 2010 Russia and the US joined the East Asia Summit also comprising 16 Asia and the Pacific states which are to meet again this November joined by Dmitry Medvedev and Barack Obama.

Russia and ASEAN established ties in 1996 and are now economic and political partners. ASEAN mainly needs Russia’s involvement into relations with China, says ASEAN expert Viktor Sumsky

"The countries are concerned with China-US rivalry on their territory and Russia has been invited as a general balance, not counterbalance to China. Russia has repeatedly proved its peaceful intentions in the region and may deter the belligerent parties. That is important as balance and prosperity in the region depend on stability-oriented powers."

Russia’s efforts also provided for a breakthrough in security at the summit, Indonesia FM and the forum’s president Marty Natalegawa said. The countries managed to agree on a nuke-free zone in the region, as the two Koreas agreed to resume talks without any preconditions after Sergey Lavrov had met with his N.Korean counterpart Pak Ui Chun during the Russia-ASEAN session. The parties talked Korea’s nukes and N.Korean diplomat thanked Russia for its mediation efforts in resuming the six- party talks, featuring Russia, China, the US, Japan and the Koreas. They were launched in 2003 and have been at a deadlock since 2008. However, this time the two Korean delegations talked and confirmed their readiness to implement the 2005 agreement on nuclear disarmament which envisages shutting down N.Korea’s nuclear program in exchange for safety guarantees and aid from the global community.

Further talks will be held on Bali in November with Russia and the US being in.

Bali Nine lawyer welcomes online campaign

The lawyer for the two Bali Nine members on death row agrees diplomacy is the best way forward for his clients but is not opposed to an online campaign supporting their bid for clemency from the Indonesian president.

Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, the so-called ringleaders of the 2005 plot to smuggle more than 8kg of heroin from Bali to Australia, are likely to apply for clemency from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, after the Indonesian Supreme Court rejected their final appeals against the death sentence.

Their Australian-based lawyer, Julian McMahon, said on Wednesday that he welcomed a campaign launched last week which will use social media to raise awareness about their case and

The comments come after the respected Indonesian human rights group, Kontras, on Tuesday called for a low-key diplomatic approach to the case, saying the online campaign could actually do more harm than good.

But Mr McMahon sees the online effort as a positive step.

"Kontras have said that diplomacy, not an online campaign, is the best way forward," he said.

"I agree with Kontras, but I also welcomed the new website. As a lawyer for Chan and Sukumaran, it is obvious to me that diplomacy is what matters most now, it is central to how this case ends. I know both countries share that view, and I am glad."

"But the death penalty cannot be confined to diplomacy."

Kontras, otherwise known as the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence, has warned there was a risk that a public campaign could have a negative effect on the attitudes of people in Indonesia as well as that of the president.

"People will be saying that this issue was raised and funded by foreign people and Indonesia is being controlled by a foreign power," spokesman for the Jakarta-based group said on Tuesday.

"The best way for now would be to adopt a diplomatic approach and focus efforts on trying to reduce the sentence."

However, Mr McMahon said mercycampaign.org website, which is organised by a group of Melbourne lawyers, was by no means disrespectful to Indonesia or its people.

"It's inevitable that there will be discussion, which of course increases pressure on me, on my clients on death row, on all the decision-makers, politicians and diplomats involved. So I want to see that debate done in the best way possible," he said.

"I have no doubt that people who read it will find the website respectful, and a sensible way of progressing the inevitable public debate, whatever their views about the death penalty.

Dr Yudhoyono has previously indicated he is reluctant to show mercy to people facing death sentences, and in particular those convicted of drug trafficking offences.

But he has also recently criticised Saudi Arabia for executing an Indonesian maid convicted of murder and has also stepped in to save another maid who was facing death after being convicted by a Riyadh court of killing a relative of her Yemeni employer.

Pakistan to get rid of Bali bombing suspect

ISLAMABAD - Notwithstanding serious apprehensions expressed by Indonesian authorities that their local courts will not be able to prosecute Umar Patek, the prime suspect in the 2002 Bali nightclub bombing, if tried at home, the Pakistan government has finally decided to extradite to Indonesia the Jemaah Islamiya commander. He was arrested from Abbottabad where he was supposed to meet al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, later killed in an American military raid on May 1, 2011.

Patek, who reportedly trained with al-Qaeda in Afghanistan before the 9/11 terror attacks on the United States, was able to remain plugged into transnational terror networks for almost a decade despite being one of the world's most wanted terrorists for his role in the Bali bombing that killed more than 200 people, mostly

Patek was captured by Pakistani security agencies in Abbottabad on January 25, belying earlier reports that he had been killed in a military operation in Sulu province of the Philippines on September 14, 2006.

Carrying US$1 million head money, Patek was arrested along with his Filipino wife from the Abbottabad district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province following a bloody gun battle with Pakistani law-enforcement agencies.

However, the Pakistani authorities only made public his arrest two months later, on March 30. Patek is a key leader of the Jemaah Islamiya (JI or Islamic Group in Arabic), which has deep links with al-Qaeda and wants to establish an Islamic state in the region, encompassing Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the southern Philippines and southern Thailand.

Patek's seizure became possible in the wake of a tip off by US intelligence sleuths who had been monitoring some of his close aides in Pakistan following intelligence reports that he and some other al-Qaeda-linked terrorists operating from the Pak-Afghan tribal belt were planning to carry out yet another major terrorist attack in the US to commemorate 10 years since 9/11.

Born in 1970, Patek, a well-trained explosives expert with high-ranking contacts in al-Qaeda, fled Indonesia and joined up with fighters of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in the Philippines, where he led a JI training camp in Mindanao.

Patek returned to Indonesia sometime in 2010 to establish al-Qaeda's training camp in the Aceh area of Indonesia, located on the northern tip of Sumatra Island. As per Indonesian intelligence input, Patek entered Pakistan via Bangkok in Thailand to meet the fugitive al-Qaeda chief to discuss funding, recruiting and future terrorist operations. Commanders from al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, al-Qaeda in Iraq, al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and JI are sighted in Pakistan from time to time.

There are those in the intelligence community who believe that the 40-year-old Indonesian terrorist, who was treated at an army hospital for bullet wounds to his legs following his arrest, might have spilled the beans on Bin Laden's whereabouts during interrogations.

According to Indonesian authorities, he traveled to Abbottabad in August 2010 and was aiming to meet Bin Laden to get his support and protection.

Indonesian Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro claimed, on May 5, hardly two days after Bin Laden was killed, that Patek had been in Abbottabad to meet Bin Laden because he was also a deputy commander of al-Qaeda's Southeast Asian affiliate, JI. "The information we have is that Umar Patek was in Pakistan with his Filipino wife and trying to meet Osama bin Laden," the defense minister stated.

According to well-informed circles in the Pakistani security establishment, the run of good luck for Patek actually ended on January 23, with the arrest of two Frenchmen from Lahore. Both white jihadis were detained from the Defense Housing Authority area while meeting with an al-Qaeda-linked Pakistani national, Tahir Shehzad.

The Frenchmen were part of the JI and were scheduled to travel with Patek from Abbottabad to the North Waziristan tribal region where al-Qaeda's top command is based.

One detained French citizen was of Pakistani origin while the other was a convert to Islam. Tahir Shehzad had been under surveillance since last year when he was spotted in Abbottabad with an Arab terror suspect. As he left Abbottabad for Lahore on January 23, Pakistani security sleuths followed him and eventually arrested him along with the two French militants, whom he had picked up from Allama Iqbal International Airport. Their subsequent interrogations led to the arrest of Patek from Abbottabad.

Come in Indonesia The Pakistan government had given Indonesia the first choice over three other countries - the United States, Australia and the Philippines - to get Patek's custody, primarily because of his Indonesian citizenship.

This was despite the fact that Pakistan does not share an extradition treaty with Indonesia and the American Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had sought his custody for having killed seven American nationals in the Bali bombing and also because of his links to al-Qaeda, which is blamed for the 9/11 attacks.

Similarly, Australia wants him in custody for having killed 88 Australian nationals in the Bali suicide attack. And last but not the least, the Philippines wants Patek for planning several terrorist attacks in the country with the help of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, a separatist terror group that is active in southern Philippines.

However, to the surprise of the Pakistan government, the Indonesian authorities maintained that they were not very keen to get Patek's custody and that they would have no objection if Islamabad handed him over to any other country where he is wanted for prosecution.

The Indonesian authorities were of the view that his extradition to Jakarta to face terrorism charges would create problems for them as the anti-terrorism law in Indonesia was only enacted in August 2003, and it can't be applied retroactively to punish Patek for the Bali bombing, carried out in October 2002.

Therefore, the National Anti-Terror Agency of Indonesia recently requested Pakistan hand over Patek to the United States, as was the case with his co-conspirator in the Bali bombing, Riduan Isamuddin alias Hambali, who was arrested in Thailand in 2003 but later flown to the US.

Hambali is lingering in the US-run terrorist detention offshore facility in Guantanamo Bay, along with hundreds of other terrorist suspects linked to al-Qaeda. Jakarta did make a formal representation on Hambali's behalf, but never seriously, knowing well that bringing him back to Indonesia would only lead to legal complications that could also lead to him walking free.

However, Pakistan, whose military and diplomatic ties with the US have touched their lowest ebb in the aftermath of the May 2 Abbottabad operation to hunt down Bin Laden, has turned down the Indonesian request, apparently in a fit of anger and decided to hand him over to Jakarta for prosecution.

"Pakistan delivered a message in early July that they will send Umar Patek to Indonesia," the National Anti-Terror Agency deputy chief, Tito Karnavian, is reported to have told journalists on July 25. "Indonesia's Foreign and Justice ministries are now working to process Patek's deportation," he said, adding that Patek's transfer may increase the threat of terrorism in the region. He further warned that it may be difficult to convict him for his role in the Bali attacks as it occurred before more stringent laws on terrorism were enacted.

In an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald in the first week of July, the head of Indonesia's anti-terrorism agency, Ansyaad Mbai, stated that Patek would become a new figurehead for violent jihadis if returned to the country of his birth.

"Umar Patek was chased by many countries. There was a [million dollar] prize on his head, but now that he's arrested it is as if Indonesia must face the problem alone," Ansyaad told the newspaper.

"This man is very dangerous. His presence here would increase the terror threat, not only to Indonesia but to several countries with a presence here," Ansyaad. He also agreed that Indonesia would face difficulties bringing him to justice as the bombings occurred before Indonesia enacted its counter-terrorism laws.

Terrorism experts say the Indonesian authorities' reluctance to get Patek's custody is telling. Since the 2002 attacks, they remind, Indonesia has made counter-terrorism a national priority, arresting hundreds of militants and weakening al-Qaeda-linked networks.

But the threat of militarism persists.

In March, a series of book bombs was sent to four liberal Indonesians - a politician, a counter-terror expert, the chair of a youth organization and a singer. In April, a suicide bomber attacked a security forces' mosque, killing himself and injuring 30 others. In June, Jakarta was put on lock-down for the trial of extremist Indonesian cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, who, despite being sentenced in connection with the Bali bombings, was greeted like a religious rock star outside the court.

Therefore, the Indonesian authorities rightly worry that Patek's case, like that of Bashir, could become a rallying cry for would-be jihadis. The million-dollar question remains: will the Indonesian authorities be able to penalize Patek once he is extradited to Jakarta?

Bali talks give green light for six-party talks

Hopes are rising that the long-stalled six-party talks may resume as the two Koreas held a rare official talk for the first time since 2008.

The South Korean top nuclear envoy Wi Sung-lac and his North Korean counterpart Ri Yong-ho held surprise talks in the Indonesian island of Bali on Friday.

“Our meeting was constructive and fruitful,” Wi told reporters after the talk. “We have agreed to make joint efforts in the upcoming denuclearization talk processes.”

North Korean envoy Ri also said that the two Koreas would work together to resume the six-party dialogue as soon as possible, officials said.

During this Bali talk, neither brought up the two incidents for which the South had been demanding an apology for ― the torpedoing of the South Korean Cheonan corvette Cheonan and the North Korean shelling on the South Korean northwestern border island of Yeonpyeong. As the North denied responsibility for either, the incidents have for long held back the inter-Korean relationship.

In an apparent move to keep the momentum for dialogue going, Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan met with his North Korean counterpart Pak Ui-chun on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum on Saturday.

The foreign ministers from 27 countries who participated in the forum also adopted a joint statement supporting the denuclearization talks between South and North Korea.

The inter-Korean talks in Bali came as Seoul has turned to the two-track strategy, softening its stance of demanding Pyongyang’s apology as pre-condition for dialogue and seeking to restart talks despite the incidents.

South-North contacts in the Indonesian resort are considered the first step of the three-stage dialogue formula leading to the six-party forum before it enters the second phase with Pyongyang-Washington talks. The third and final round would be the resumption of six-party talks on the North’s denuclearization and possible assistance to Pyongyang in return.

In addition to the two Koreas, the six-party talks would include the United States, Japan, Russia and host China.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Japanese Foreign Minister Takeaki Matsumoto also welcomed the long-awaited dialogue between the North and the South, and adopted a joint statement on Saturday to encourage sustainable progress in the future.

The inter-Korean contacts in Bali elated politicians here in Korea. “I believe that the Bali talks will greatly contribute to the development of the inter-Korean relationship,” said Rep. Hong Joon-pyo, chairman of the ruling Grand National Party. Rep. Sohn Hak-kyu of the main opposition Democratic Party also expressed hopes that the event may act as a key to breaking the six-party talks deadlock.

Despite expectations for the thawing of frosty ties between Seoul and Pyongyang in the wake of the Bali meeting, Cheong Wa Dae calls for caution on the outlooks of inter-Korean relations.

“It would be premature to expect immediate changes,” said a key official from the presidential office.

“Inter-Korean relation may not advance unless North Korea makes official apologies for the Cheonan and Yeongpyeong attacks.”

Clinton also stressed that North Korea should first achieve a number of tasks in order to improve its ties with South Korea, if it wishes to come back to the roundtable.

This was largely in response to the concerns that the North may regard the inter-Korea talks as a mere stage to reach out to Washington.

Despite Clinton’s approach, however, it is the majority opinion that the Pyongyang-Washington talks may no longer be a reality as the North may once again carry out another nuclear test.

“Though there are varying opinions about the timeline and details, participants have agreed that the six-party talks and its three-step formula need not be changed,” said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the ARF.

“The recent circumstances make us all anticipate the resumption of the stalled communication.”

Calls for Australian trial for Bali bomber

ELEANOR HALL: The Australian Government is distancing itself from a suggestion that one of the masterminds of the Bali Bombings should face trial here, rather than in Indonesia.

Umar Patek is now in Pakistan where he was arrested earlier this year but the head of Indonesia's anti-terrorism agency told Fairfax newspapers that Patek could inspire violence from jihadis if he were to be tried in Indonesia and that he could coordinate terrorist networks from inside the prison.

Simon Santow has the latest.

SIMON SANTOW: Umar Patek may not be a household name in Australia, but in Indonesia his arrest earlier this year was considered very significant.

CARL UNGERER: Umar Patek was one of the senior members of the Jemaah Islamiah organisation in the early 1990s. He along with a lot of his comrades had spent some time training and in Afghanistan during the 1990s, had come back and was a key figure in the lead-up to the 2002 Bali bombings.

SIMON SANTOW: Carl Ungerer is the director of the national security program at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute.

CARL UNGERER: As a half-Arab, half-Indonesian he was someone who could move easily between the two cultural areas and provided a key link for that connection between Al Qaeda and Jemaah Islamiah.

SIMON SANTOW: He's done extensive work inside Indonesian jails, and written about the ways in which suspected and convicted terrorists are treated inside the justice system.

Carl Ungerer says Umar Patek is a formidable terrorist. He's not a bomb-making technician but is an organiser and a committed religious fanatic.

CARL UNGERER: Like all of these jihadis, he has a very virulent and anti-Western ideology based on you know, a distorted view of religion and he would, there has been no indication that he has moved away from those views.

SIMON SANTOW: International law experts say there's nothing stopping Australia from extraditing Patek from Pakistan and trying him as an alleged terrorist in courts here, although it does complicate the job of coordinating evidence and arranging witnesses.

Professor Don Rothwell is from the Australian National University in Canberra.

DONALD ROTHWELL: There was a raft of counter terrorism legislation enacted post-9/11 and in the early part of 2002 so the provisions for the Crimes Act are fairly detailed now in terms of offences that were committed against Australian nationals virtually anywhere in the world.

And there’s also an interesting argument that Patek and the other Bali bombers could have committed a crime against humanity which would also trigger Australian criminal legislation.

SIMON SANTOW: Leanne Brown was 25 and in Paddy's Bar in Bali when the bombs went off back in 2002.

Now nine years later she's had her first child and the burns that scarred 25 per cent of her body are not as painful as they once were.

LEANNE BROWN: When I hear anything about the Indonesian justice system I just - corrupt. It is just, you know, you hear stories that they are let out for coffees, you can buy your way in Bali so to me, by putting them in jail, it is not really serving a purpose there because they have still got the freedom.

They don’t, it is not as, Indonesia doesn't seem to be as strict and as horrible in Australia. It is sort of like they go there and they still have a say.

SIMON SANTOW: She says that while she has more faith in justice Australian-style, bringing Patek here, she feels is also not ideal.

LEANNE BROWN: When they are closer to Australia they can also, in our jail corrupt people to start to get into the terrorism so I suppose at least in Bali they’re further away where if you bring them to Australia they are closer to Australians so then they can hurt us again.

SIMON SANTOW: Carl Ungerer says that while the system is different in Indonesia, Patek could still be held there and kept in some form of isolation.

CARL UNGERER: He was brought back to Indonesia he would probably find himself in one of the police lock-ups probably in Jakarta where they hold a number of other senior JI leaders.

They probably would not want to put him into one of the larger prisons because of the concern that he would use that opportunity to incite violence amongst some of the other prisoners, so holding him in a different kind of detention I assumed would be the option until he could be tried.

SIMON SANTOW: But there would presumably be quite a time lag before that might happen?

CARL UNGERER: Yeah, difficult to say Simon. It is, you know, cases like the Abu Bakar Bashir case, you know, he was tried and arrested in 2004/2005 yet again this year has only just gone through another trial process. These things do take time and in consistent with the Indonesian legal process, he wouldn't quickly find himself in front of a court.

ELEANOR HALL: That is security analyst Carl Ungerer from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, ending Simon Santow's report

Gorgeous people, incredible scenery, amazing food. After seven holidays in Bali, my husband Bill and I can't get enough of this stunning place. There is just so much to do and see.

Keeping away from the crowds of Kuta, we book a villa in Seminyak. Five-star one-bedroom villas are reasonably priced and there is such a variety to suit everyone's tastes. The bonus? Your own swimming pool and privacy. Breakfast is cooked every morning in your own villa, however we found ourselves walking on the beach at 6.30am and heading to local bistros for their healthy vegetables juices and to soak up the atmosphere.

Seminyak is the uber cool part of town, with lots of boutiques, eateries and design stores. It's here where nearly all our favourite restaurants and bars are too. Cocktails at the Legian, dinner at The Living Room, newbie Sarong, Metis is an experience, especially if you have a penchant for foie gras, presented six ways.

Hu'u bar and restaurant is an old favourite and is great for both lunch and dinner. Lying on one of the big white cushions in the garden after dinner is luxurious.

Legendary Ku De Ta for sunset people-watching and tapas; Frangipani for decadent frozen margaritas. You are just so spoilt for choice that on our last trip we had to write a list.

The beauty of Bali is you immediately find yourself winding down. You can totally immerse yourself into the culture, or simply shut the door of your villa and chill out. Modern and old architecture combined with lush planting is so inspiring. We stumbled on a beautiful bar, Sardine, set in paddy fields, quite by accident as we were out on our scooter one day. The recently opened W Hotel took our breath away.

Sunset and dinner in the new Seaside restaurant with its unique wood decor and aquarium is magic, while the Fire restaurant boasts a $750,000 chandelier and a fit-out that is straight out of a twentieth century set. Everything is a visual feast, right down to the tiniest detail, and the staff, outstanding. When they found out it was our anniversary they went completely overboard, organising red roses and an anniversary dessert.

A must-do is a day trip to Karma Kandara. An exquisite cliff-top resort with a steep cable car down to one of Bali's best kept secrets, Nammos Beach Club. Daybeds are available with waiters on hand for your every whim. To swim in the warm, crystal clear lagoon makes this a day you will never forget.

For all out glamour The Rock Bar in Ayana Resort and Spa is spectacular. An open-top bar perched metres above Jimbaran Bay coastline, is simply breathtaking and ditto on the cocktails. Afterwards, we head to one of the many beach restaurants for a seafood extravaganza. Picking the freshest seafood and cooking it over hot coals is simple and delicious. Team with an ice-cold Bin tang and watch the sunset go down and the nightlife take off.

On our latest trip we booked into the Elysian - one of the hippest hotels in the world - for a cooking course.

Picked up at 7am, we experienced the centuries-old market in Denpasar, with our chef choosing some of her key ingredients for the dishes we were about to prepare. Back at the hotel - poolside - we chopped, sliced and prepared beef redang, seafood spring rolls and mastered the art of rolling, then eating. There are more intense courses available, but we wanted a more individual experience and The Elysian fitted the bill.

Shopping is a must, especially homewares. There is a great selection to choose from and you can order whatever you want and have it shipped home easily. Articles can be made to your exact specifications and dealing with the locals is fun. And the massages are simply heaven on a stick. It's so reasonably priced you have one every day. No wonder we feel so relaxed by the time we arrive home.

Chill out in Big Sur

Viva fashion editor Ana Macdonald road tripped around California to a retreat in Big Sur.

My dear friend Antoinette and I had made a pact: to visit a secluded retreat by the name of the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. Population a mere 1000. The retreat is named after the Esselen Indians who lived there, and is a non-profit organisation devoted to meditation, massage, Gestalt, yoga, psychology, ecology, and spirituality, offering more than 500 public workshops a year, in addition to conferences and residential work-study programmes.

Antoinette had trained in Sivananda Yoga in California a few years prior and had made close friends with many people while at the ashram. One of her acquaintances, Rachel, had given up her life as a lawyer in LA and made Esalen her home and way of life.

To get there we hit the road, Thelma and Louise-style, and drove two hours south of San Francisco along the Pacific Coast Highway. The views along the coast were stunning and we embraced our newfound freedom. Cliffs dropped steeply into the sea below us as we zoomed along passing huge Redwood forests and flocks of pelicans, families of seals, deer and bears. The area has a wild natural beauty and the retreat isn't hugely signposted, its isolation being a major drawcard for those seeking spiritual, mental and physical wellbeing.

Totally famished when we first arrived, we luckily made it bang on 6pm for dinner in the main lodge and our love-affair with Esalen began. The food was incredible. I have truly never tasted strawberries like it - the aroma hit you before you took the first bite, all the food had so much flavour.

Deliciously creative vegetarian, vegan and meat or fish dishes appeared each dinner time and breakfasts offered a wonderful choice, the most popular being a mix of quinoa, curly kale and "Braggs" sauce, strange but true - very simple, highly addictive and oh-so-good for you. The chunky home-made rye and seed bread was so good I had dreams about it. I had to buy the cookbook...

A large proportion of the fruit and vegetables are organically grown on the 2ha hillside farm. The food and flower gardens are lovingly tended by dedicated gardeners, and visitors can attend workshops to learn organic gardening skills.

After lunch, the very talented singers, bongo and guitar players among the group played impromptu jams on the huge deck surrounding the lodge. And for those who can't survive without a little tipple, there's a tiny bar selling beer and local wines between 6-8pm. I'm not usually adverse to a couple of wines and a knees-up myself, but because your day starts pretty early and you want to savour all the goodness you're treating yourself to, we found ourselves asleep by 8.30pm most nights.

We were fortunate enough to stay in Rachel's log cabin in the residents' area, which was on the cliff edge and overlooked the Pacific Ocean's rough sea and pebble beaches. The 100-plus residents (including young families and those in their 70s) have a great sense of community and all contribute to the retreat in some way. They enjoy their wholesome lifestyle so much, they rarely seem to feel the urge to visit the big smoke, everything they need is here, including a pre-school. Besides which, there's a seemingly endless stream of worldly arty-farty types visiting the retreat.

There are various accommodation options at Esalen from US$125 ($148) a night for shared bunk rooms, to private luxury cabins on the cliffs.

There's a vast variety of workshops on offer throughout each week and "seminarians" can stay for a month or more at a time. We attended the yoga, Pranayama (breathing techniques) and meditation. But I was really surprised to enjoy the "SoulSong" class at 6.45am. Quite a scary prospect, even for someone who considers herself a bit of an "old hippie", I actually found this workshop uplifting, exciting and it truly made your heart sing.

I overheard a 20-something, computer-nerd-type saying "we just don't make time to do this kind of simple stuff anymore these days" - I wondered, did he mean like eating, breathing and sleeping properly perhaps?

Students and teachers from all over the globe come here and have done since it opened in the early 1960s. Joan Baez started The New Folk Music Workshop here and it's seen the likes of Bob Dylan, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Ravi Shankar and numerous other artists, philosophers, physicists and psychologists.

And it's seen its fair share of Hollywood stars too: we were highly miffed we missed Jake Gyllenhaal and his sister Maggie who had visited the previous month. However, doing downward dog and hanging out washing with supermodel Shalom Harlow gave me something to gossip about back home. Yes, she is dropdead gorgeous in the flesh, tie-dyed leggings and all. It turns out her Jesus-doppelganger-boyfriend works and lives here.

Originally, this area enticed people with its natural hot springs. Esalen Institute now boasts an amazing modern spa, again in the most spectacular setting right on the cliff edge, where you can have a variety of massages, including the Esalen special.

There are single bathtubs that you can top up with the healing, hot thermal water or communal baths overlooking the sea. We were a little weirded out about the nude factor but it became second nature and we met and befriended some pretty interesting and free-thinking people ...

You get the feeling Shalom, like many other Americans from the bigger cities like LA and San Francisco, comes to escape the madness and reclaim some form of a simple life, back in nature; even if it's only for a week. We only had six days, but by the end of our stay, we wanted more and thought, just maybe, this was a way of life we could see ourselves enjoying permanently.

Close to home

Fashion writer Natalie Smith leaves the city for a spontaneous weekend of relaxation at an eco-resort close to home.

Sometimes the most relaxing trips away are spur of the moment, close to home and, well, for us at least, super affordable (read: cheap). My boyfriend had just finished two weeks recording a new album and that meant lots of late nights, beers and bad food - we had both been too busy to spend much time together, so decided to spend the weekend away from Auckland - our only restrictions were that we didn't want to drive for more than two hours.

We settled on Solscape, an eco-resort in Whale Bay, just out of Raglan. There are various accommodation options to choose from, and while the teepees, with their Indian bedspreads and pounded earth floors appealed, we were wary of the winter weather and settled on a cute caboose - a converted train carriage to spend the nights in. There are also campervan sites and beautiful self-contained cottages on offer.

We packed the car with books, a guitar, some wine and warm clothes; paid a quick visit to the farmers' market to stock up on picnic supplies and hightailed it out of Auckland.

Solscape is a beautiful place, with commanding views of Whale Bay and a serene atmosphere. We took walks around the native bush that border it, had a Shiatsu massage from a local masseuse who comes to the resort on request and fell asleep to the sound of rain on the roof of our caboose. The next morning we spent lazing around in the reading room, a round, pounded earth room with shelves of books and a mezzanine floor.

The Raglan Creative Markets were humming as we headed for home and we stocked up on lavender soap, home-made pesto, fresh bread and herb seedlings; and stopped into The Shack for a huge vegetarian breakfast and good coffee.

We'll go back in summer, when the teepees are up, the outdoor pizza oven is lit and we can take a group of friends and go swimming at one of the beautiful bays.

Bali "second chance"

The mother of the Bali Nine ringleader Myuran Sukumaran has asked the Indonesian president to give her son a "second chance".

The Indonesian Supreme Court this month rejected Sukumaran's final appeal against his death sentence for his part in the 2005 plot to smuggle more than eight kilograms of heroin from Bali to Australia.

Sukumaran was the last of the Bali Nine with an appeal pending, and like fellow member Andrew Chan, must now rely on clemency from Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono if he is to avoid a firing squad.

"President please, please give my son a second chance," Rajini Sukumaran told SBS's Dateline.

Reporter Mark Davis who conducted the interview, which was aired last night, followed Ms Sukumaran as she travelled to Bali to see her son for the first time since his appeal was rejected.

Ms Sukumaran said she hopes he will get a second chance.

"He has done a lot of good things in the prison to help a lot of people inside, and I'd ask the president to give him a second chance," she told Dateline.

Ms Sukumaran said she felt shocked when her son's appeal was denied.

"Myuran's doing well in the prison and we thought everything was going to be alright.

"I feel like something has been taken off me. I feel really lost. I don't know what to think anymore."

Sukumaran's sister Brintha said she doesn't think Australians understand what her brother is facing.

"I think because of the way it's been played out in the media, it's almost like, just a story, an ongoing story and it's never really going to end because something's always happening," she told Dateline.

"I don't think they realise that it might actually end one day, and that will be him being executed."

Bali: Magic relaxes resolve

Being a travel writer - as I have sometimes grandly described myself - means never being able to say you're on holiday. Every destination, even the most mundane or local, may hold an experience, a story, or a character you feel compelled to explore and perhaps convey in print.

And so I have gone out of my way to see a bizarre museum dedicated to Elvis Presley in small-town Mississippi, followed my instincts to a tiny island off the coast of the bickering Koreas where the sole attractions were pumpkin candy and dried seaweed, and travelled up a river in Sarawak to spend the night with people who had shrunken skulls hanging on their longhouse's wall.

But this year, with encouragement from my wife, I took a holiday. There was a significant birthday to acknowledge, so we went to Bali.

We avoided the fleshpots of Kuta; my wife having found the comfortable, quiet Santi Mandala Villa and Spa in a pleasant valley just 20 minutes from Ubud. For a week I did a whole lot of nothing.

We spent hours by the pool drifting in and out of consciousness to the sound of ambient gamelan-styled music, watched colourful kites in the clear blue sky, sometimes went into Ubud to poke around the market and eat, and had a holiday just like other people do.

We slept deep and late, and ...

And then I fell off the wagon. I couldn't help myself. Curiosity got the better of me so we went into Ubud and I bought Indonesian rock and pop CDs to investigate (I'm listening to the punk band Superman is Dead singing Kuta Rock City right now).

At night we attended traditional dance and gamelan concerts (one of steel gamelan in the famous Ubud palace, the other of bamboo in the nearby village of Bentuyung), I bought a book on gamelan and I started to ask questions.

We joined in a local festival then and, with a young couple from San Francisco, we hired a knowledgeable driver for a day who took us into traditional homes and ancient temples, down to the impoverished village of Kedisan beside Danau Batur (the lake) in the shadow of Ganung Batur (the mist-covered mountain). We tramped into chokingly claustrophobic jungle near the Elephant Cave. We took photos, I made notes ...

On our final day, with a late-night flight home, we decided to go to Kuta, then wiser and lazier thoughts prevailed. We stayed poolside. It was an utterly relaxing day. I felt I could get into this.

And so I had a holiday, and kept a promise to myself: I haven't written a thing about it.
